What is Junkanoo?
Junkanoo? Yeah, I know I was puzzled too.
It’s a Bahamian festival full of feathery costumes, masquerading, & parading in celebration of John Canoe.
Victorious, noble & brave the Ahanta chief was. A Ghana local turned hero, or a man just standing up for slavery abolishment.
Either way, you put it, the gold merchant, slave freedom fighter & Prussian ally helped create peace for his people until his gallant 7 years of warriorhood against the Dutch proclaimed him a celebrated legend locally named John Canoe.
The Bahamian Festival named after the West African Chief John Canoe – “Junkanoo”, fills the streets with masks & music after Christmas in the Bahamas & several Caribbean islands.
Vivacious song & dance, seafood, tropical fruits & savored Conch Salad are enjoyed in remembrance of the once-known expressed jubilation by the formerly captive African slave community of the Gold Coast.
