Natural Hair Care Tips for Summer Styles

Summer prep has begun, & what to do with your hair is now the latest puzzle. Braid it up for active days, rock the curls for leisurely outings, or silk press it out for a sleek styled look?

Which ever you choose, there are 10 things to keep in mind when choosing your summer Doo!

1. Moisturize regularly: Hydrated hair is key, especially during the summer months when the heat can cause dryness. Wash with shampoo’s & conditioners that contain oils. Use a leave-in conditioner or moisturizing hair cream to keep your strands moisturized and prevent breakage. The LOC method ( Leave- in, Oil, Cream) helps with this.

2. Protect your hair from the sun: Just like you protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, you should also protect your hair. Consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat or using a scarf to shield your hair from direct sunlight, which can cause damage and dryness.

3. Deep condition regularly: Deep conditioning treatments are essential for maintaining the health and hydration of natural hair. Use a deep conditioner once a week or as needed to nourish and strengthen your strands.

4. Use a sulfate-free shampoo: Sulfates can strip natural hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and breakage. Opt for sulfate-free shampoos that gently cleanse the hair without stripping away moisture.

5. Avoid heat styling: Limit the use of heat styling tools such as flat irons and blow dryers, as excessive heat can cause damage to natural hair. Embrace protective styles like braids, twists, and buns to minimize heat exposure and keep your hair healthy. If you do heat, utilize heat protectant, and stretch the length of your styling for as long as you can.

6. Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is essential for overall hair health, as hydration starts from within. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day to keep your hair and scalp hydrated from the inside out.

7. Protect your hair while swimming: Chlorine and saltwater can be drying and damaging to natural hair. Before swimming, saturate your hair with water and apply a leave-in conditioner or oil to create a protective barrier. After swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water and follow up with a moisturizing treatment.

8. If you’re a Trimmer- Trim regularly: Regular trims are essential for maintaining the health and appearance of natural hair. Trim your ends every 8-12 weeks to prevent split ends and breakage, and promote healthy growth. If you’re aren’t- oil your ends well.

9. Sleep on a satin pillowcase or wear a satin bonnet: Cotton pillowcases can absorb moisture from your hair and cause friction, leading to breakage and frizz. Sleeping on a satin pillowcase or wearing a satin bonnet can help retain moisture and prevent damage while you sleep.

10. Listen to your hair: Pay attention to how your hair responds to different products and treatments, and adjust your routine accordingly. Every individual’s hair is unique, so it’s essential to listen to your hair’s needs and give it the care it deserves.
